Electrical Safety Checks Every Homeowner Should Do Once a Year

Electricity is something we take for granted—until something sparks, smells or stops working. A simple annual safety check can prevent many problems.

Walk through the house and look at all switchboards and sockets. Are any of them warm to the touch when in use? Do any spark slightly when you plug things in? These are signs that wiring or the socket might need attention.

Check for loose or broken switches, cracked plates, and exposed wires. Even if they still work, they’re not safe long-term and should be repaired or replaced.

Look at extension boards and multi-plugs. Are you overloading one point with too many heavy appliances (heater, iron, microwave, etc.)? Spread the load or add proper dedicated sockets instead. Extension boards are for light, temporary use—not permanent high-power setups.

If your home is old, ask an electrician to inspect the main distribution board (MCB box), earthing and wiring condition every few years. Upgrading old fuse-based systems to modern MCB and RCD/ELCB systems adds an extra layer of protection.

Electrical safety is not a one-time project; it’s regular attention to small warning signs before they become big issues.
