Safety Tips for Kids Staying Alone at Home for a Few Hours

There comes a time when older kids may need to stay alone at home for a short while—after school, before you get back from work, or during a quick errand. Preparing them well is essential.

First, make clear rules about the door: no opening for strangers, delivery people, or “service technicians” they weren’t told about. If someone insists, they should call you or a trusted neighbour, not argue at the door.

Teach them basic emergency numbers and where they’re written—near the phone or on the fridge: your number, another family member, neighbour, building security, local emergency services.

Show them where main switches and gas valves are, but also make it clear what they should not touch if they’re unsure. If you use gas stoves, decide whether cooking is allowed or strictly no-flame when alone.

Explain how to handle unexpected situations—power cuts, loud arguments in the corridor, or someone claiming to be from maintenance. Role-play helps them remember.

Most importantly, keep the first few times short and check in regularly. Confidence grows on both sides when things go smoothly.
