Open shelves can be beautiful or completely chaotic, depending on how you use them. The trick is to treat them like a display, not a storage dump.
Start by removing everything and putting items back in layers. Mix books, decor objects, plants and photos instead of crowding one type in one spot.
Follow a loose rule: some vertical elements (tall vases, stacked books), some horizontal (lying books, low bowls), and some “air” (empty space) on each shelf. That breathing room is what stops it from looking messy.
Use boxes or baskets on lower shelves to hide small things—remotes, cables, candles, chargers—that don’t look good on display.
Stick to a limited colour palette overall. You don’t need everything matching, but too many random colours and shapes create visual noise.
And remember, shelves don’t have to be full. Leaving gaps actually makes what’s there stand out more.
